Our
primary activities at BABC are
organized seminars and networking
events, where we bring together
members and prospective members
in forums in which they can make
new contacts, learn new topics
of interest and discover new business
opportunities.
These
events include a combination of
educational seminars, informal
business networking sessions and
social gatherings - usually centered
on our shared British-American
interests. Depending on the particular
topic, locations vary around the
Bay Area. These events are planned
and organized by three volunteer
committees, one based in San Francisco,
another in Silicon Valley and
the third in the East Bay. The
Committees always welcome new
members who would like to apply
their energies and ideas towards
the planning of exciting new events
- please contact the BABC office
for details, or talk to committee
members when you attend an event.
Please look at what is planned
over the next few months, and
also visit our archives to view
some of our past events.

Mostly
British Film Festival
The Mostly
British Film Festival
returns this month with 32
movies from the UK, Ireland,
South Africa and Australia.
Highlights include two animated
features shortlisted for Oscars
and the Northern California
premiere of the "Red
Riding'' crime trilogy
introduced by film scholar
David Thomson, who has called
it "better than the Godfather.''
The series also presents new
work from Paul Bettany, Samantha
Morton, John Malkovich, Peter
O'Toole, Geoffrey Rush, Anthony
LaPaglia and Jean Simmons
in her first big screen performance
in 15 years.
Presented by the San
Francisco Neighborhood Theater
Foundation and the California
Film Institute, the second
annual Mostly British Festival
takes place February 4-11
at the Vogue
Theater in San Francisco
with selected screenings February
7-10 at the Smith Rafael Film
Center in San Rafael.
The festival opens with "London
River,'' a profoundly
moving drama set against the
backdrop of the 2005 terrorist
attack on London. Brenda Blethyn
is mesmerizing as a distraught
mother who travels from her
secluded farm to the big city
in search of a missing daughter.
The closing night film is
"Looking
for Eric,'' a sly comedy
from director Ken Loach about
a sad sack postal worker who
is taken under the wing of
real-life soccer great Eric
Cantona.
Two days will be devoted to
movies from Down Under including
local premieres of the political
thriller "Balibo''
and "Bran
Nu Dae'' based on a hit
Aboriginal stage musical.
Ted Danson narrates the documentary
"The End of the Line''
about the damage done to ocean
by industrial food production.
"Rough Aunties'' -- winner
of the 2009 Jury Prize for
documentaries at Sundance--
chronicles an advocacy group
that works with abused children
in South Africa.
Family matinees will be offered
of the Oscar-winning animated
short "Peter & the
Wolf'' and the 1948 classic
"The Red Shoes,'' shown
in a new restored print.

BABC Transatlantic
Conference 2010 - London,
UK
'Strategies
for Success - 2010-2020'
How
will the leading business
sectors contend with the challenges
of the next decade?
Willis Group, The Willis
Building
51 Lime Street
London EC3M 7DQ
The conference will take
place in a politically important
year in both the United Kingdom
and the United States, with
a general election in prospect
in Britain in the first half
of the year, and mid-term
elections due in the United
States in November. We shall
be living with the continuing
consequences of the credit
crisis, which will, undoubtedly,
continue beyond next year
and well into the new decade.
Our principal focus is to
look ahead into this new decade
and assess how the leading
business sectors in both the
UK and US will evolve, adapt,
and contend with the challenges
ahead. These challenges will
be assessed and analysed in
a series of presentations
and panels led by key global
business leaders and sector
specialists who will consider
the following sectors:
-
Healthcare
and life sciences;
-
Media, Telecoms
and the creative industries;
-
Aviation,
Defence and National Security;
-
Energy and
the Environment;
-
Financial
Services and Insurance.
In separate
sessions they shall also be
considering how Law, Taxation,
HR and Employment will likely
change in the new decade.

how your company can take
advantage of the BABC 2010

sides of the Atlantic contact
